Salicylic acid has been introduced to skincare products for years and has been often recommended as an ingredient for breakouts and blackheads. It is a remarkable ingredient and also a potential skin irritant. What salicylic acid does and how your skin can get the most from it without causing irritation to your skin
What is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, or BHA. It is extracted from willow bark tree and it is capable of exfoliating deep within your pores to remove blockages caused by sebum and dead skin cells, reducing the occurrence of blackheads and pimples. Compared to alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), which are water-soluble, salicylic acid is oil soluble, which allows it to go deeper into the skin and it is why salicylic acid products work so well for oily and breakout-out prone skin.
Benefits of Salicylic Acid
Because it can get deep into the pores of your skin, salicylic acid dissolves debris that clog pores, reduces inflammation and helps inflamed pimples and zits disappear faster. After several weeks, bumps on your skin will start smoothening out.
At higher concentrations, salicylic acid can act as an effective exfoliant. It breaks down the protein connections between skin cells and dissolves some of the intracellular ‘glue’ that hold skin cells together. While your skin is perfectly capable of removing dead skin cells, a combination of external factors and age can sometimes cause the sloughing of the top layer of skin cells to slow down. Salicylic acid loosens and breaks apart this protein ‘glue’ and makes it an effective skin exfoliator.
Salicylic acid is also useful in lightening acne scars, reducing excess oil in the pores and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.
Side Effects of Salicylic Acid
Although salicylic acid is a great weapon against acne and blackheads, due to its poor solubility in water, salicylic acid has to be formulated with alcohol and it can cause skin irritation and can potentially dry out skin after multiple usages. This makes it very limited in its application in many effective skincare formulations. This is also the reason we are very careful about introducing skincare products that contain salicylic acid. We believe as much as possible, the health of your skin should not be compromised in the pursuit of beautiful skin.
